AT Day 3: Singing in the rain

,

7th July

5 miles

Bushcamp (1398.2) to Fort Montgomery (1403.2)

I woke up to the sound of dripping water. It had been raining all night an it still was when I opened my eyes. My sleeping bag was damp and the sides of the tent were sprinkled with dirt. The water was starting to get through. Shepherd was awake too and somehow we managed to pack everything inside our tent before facing the rain. Only minutes agter exiting the tent we were soaked.

We started hiking with a big smile on our face. The trail was flooded and it was great fun for Shepherd to jump around in the water. We had only another five miles to the Bear Mountain Inn, a big fancy hotel next to the trail.

We planned to have lunch at Bear Mountain Inn and stay for the night. Arriving there we found out that the costs for staying were somewhere above $200 so Shepherd arranged a pick-up from a nearby motel. My short adventure on the Appalachian Trail was coming to an end. Tomorrow I would have to say goodbye to Shepherd and to being out in the wild again. “Normal” life was waiting for me.
