Day 131: Crater Lake National Park

Creek Camp (1796.8) to Mazama Village (1818.4)

I smelled smoke the whole night and in the morning there was a little bit of ash on my tent.
Later, in Mazama, I heard that there was a fire behind the border in Northern California. I have been there just a few days ago…

The sky was overcast for most of the day. Climbing High and Breakthrough, two hikers I camped with, were still chatting with a SoBo when I took off.
I wanted to make it all the way to Mazama where I had a resupply box.
Southern Oregon was dry and today was a 20-mile-watercarry pretty much from where we camped all the way to Mazama.
The temperature was very cool in the morning so I figured I wouldn’t need that much water. With 2.7 liters I was perfectly fine.
There was not much spectacular scenery today but I entered Crater Lake National Park.
I also met a bunch of SoBos. Two of them were impressive: Poptart and Flower were aiming for a new unsupported record. They wanted to hike the whole trail in 59 days which means averaging 45 miles a day! Crazy!! Good luck Girls!

I arrived in Mazama around 6 pm. Later Climbing High and Breakthrough cought up. And what a surprise: I also saw HR and Captain Dan again – he is now Lieutenant Dan!

Ich konnte die ganze Nacht Rauch riechen und am Morgen war etwas Asche auf meinem Zelt.
Später in Mazama erfuhr ich, dass es hinter der Grenze in Nordkalifornien brannte. Da war ich vor wenigen Tagen…

Der Himmel war fast den ganzen Tag bedeckt. Climbing High und Breakthrough, zwei Wanderer mit denen ich gezeltet habe, unterhielten sich immer noch mit einem SoBo als ich startete.
Ich wollte es bis nach Mazama schaffen, wo eine Versorgungsbox auf mich wartete.
Südoregon ist trocken und so standen heute 20 Meilen ohne Wasserquelle auf dem Programm. Es war ziemlich kühl also würde ich nicht viel brauchen. Mit 2.7 Litern würde ich bestens auskommen.
Es gab heute nicht viel Spektakuläres zu sehen aber ich betrat den Crater Lake National Park. Außerdem traf ich einige SoBos. Zwei Mädels waren besonders beeindruckend. Sie wollten einen Rekord knacken und den PCT in 59 Tagen wandern, das heißt 45 Meilen pro Tag im Durchschnitt. Verrückt aber ich wünsche den beiden viel Glück!

Gegen sechs Uhr kam ich in Mazama an. Climbing High und Breskthrough trudelten etwas später ein. Und was für eine Überraschung: ich sah HR und Captain Dan wieder – er heißt jetzt Lieutenant Dan!
